If you collect US Presidential or Political Autographs, Documents, Stamps, Ephemera or Memorabilia, this is an indispensable reference collection of engraved images. Here is a complete set - from Washington to Eisenhower - of the official US Bureau of Engraving & Printing Presidential Steel Engravings. Some of these you will recognize as they are the same engraved vignettes used on our currency and postage stamps. A scarce opportunity to acquire a complete set. I would only note in passing that Buchanan's hair style rocks and was at least a hundred years ahead of his time. See below for the full set in close -up detail. |

Set Description: A scarce complete set of American Presidential engravings by the US Bureau of Engraving & Printing. The Washington through Garfield (#1 - #20) portraits measure ≈ 5⅝" wide x 7⅝" tall overall on heavy off-white card stock. Within the overall card is the recessed gross die impression measuring roughly 4" wide x 5" tall, and centered in this impression is the die engraving itself in black ink. The medallions measure on average 2" wide x 2½" tall. The Arthur through Eisenhower (#21-#33) portraits measure ≈ 6" wide x 8" tall overall on heavy coated off-white card stock. Within the overall card there is no apparent recessed gross die impression and no Bureau of Engraving attribution. Centered on the card stock is the die engraving itself in black ink. The medallions measure on average 2" wide x 2¼" tall. While these are not attributed, these are the official US Bureau Engravings. Condition runs from very fine to extremely fine. The Washington overall is toned (slightly browned) as having been on the top of the pile, as is the back side of the Garfield. It also has a light scuff and two small water spots. Other than that there is the odd light stain, smudge or corner rounding but this on the whole is quite de minimis and the set is of very fine to extremely fine quality. The set from #1-20 is likely from the 19th century based upon paper, die impression and patina. The engravings #21-33 are much more recent - as they would have to be - and are more likely from the 1950-60's |
