Beautiful Huge Autograph by U.S. Grant, as large and dark as one could wish for, while in his first term of office as President of the United States on a large die proof-like engraving from the official US Bureau of Engraving & Printing who at that time produced the stamps, currency, notes and revenue paper of the US Government. The overall engraving measures 4" wide x 5½" tall (the oval portrait itself is 1.75" x 2.25") which is in turn pressed into and recessed on a larger presentation card (8vo heavy sheet) measuring 6" wide x 8¼" high. There are two very light water marks above and to the upper left of Grant's image neither affecting the portrait or the signature.

This portrait was signed just three days after the signing of the Treaty of Washington. This provided for the settlement by an international tribunal of American claims against England resulting from the wartime activities of the British-built Confederate raider "Alabama". The tribunal eventually awarded $15,500,000 to the United States in a well-balanced decision which left no rancor in either country.
