The embargo was taken off the French ports last night ; and this evening the Amelia arrived from Boulogne, bringing an account of a report being current there that Buonaparte and his brothers had quitted Paris and embarked at Havre for England, to seek the protection of the British.

 

Torbay Jul 23

Arrived last evening after post, HM frigate Rhin, from a cruise and sailed again, having taken several prizes with tri-coloured flags, and sent them to Portsmouth; HMS Slaney from a cruise, having on board a Frenchman of distinction; no communication is allowed between the Slaney and the shore, which leads to much conjecture regarding the identity of the Frenchman.

Buonaparte at Torbay

Torbay, July 24. Arrived this day HM ships Myrmidon and Bellerophon : on board the latter is Napoleon Buonaparte, General Bertrand, his wife and 3 children and many others. The Port Admiral at Plymouth and Lord Keith are expected this afternoon from that port, when it will be known what is to become of Napoleon and his party....No strangers are permitted to go alongside the Bellerophon, but Napoleon is seen plain enough by all at the stern gallery, and those that go round the ship have a full view of him.

 

Torbay July 26

The Bellerophon, Captain Maitland, sailed this morning about five o'clock for Plymouth, with Buonaparte and suite. On board the Slaney sloop is Marshal Baron Gourgon. Never was such a sight exhibited in Torbay before. There are gentlemen and ladies from 70 miles distance and upwards come this morning; never was such a concourse of people seen.

 

Plymouth, July 26

The Bellerophon of 74 guns, anchored in the Sound about half past four o'clock this afternoon, from Torbay, having Buonaparte on board. It is reported he will not be landed in this country, but sent from hence to St. Helena. Letters reporting meeting and seeing Napoleon.


31 Jul 1815

The naval establishment is about to be reduced immediately. Orders have been already issued for paying off several sail of the line and 19 frigates.

A large promotion of midshipmen to the rank of Lieutenants took place last week.

The Northumberland of 74 guns is being got ready at Sheerness to take Buonaparte to Saint Helena; she will sail on Saturday for Plymouth.
