George V awards his beloved Selwyn Howe Fremantle, Esquire Companion of Our Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Companion of Our Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire on Whom was also Conferred the Volunteer Officers' Decoration, Member of the Board of Revenue of the United provinces - the degree title honour and dignity of a Knight Bachelor.  Dated the nineteenth day of October 19 1925

The Great Seal of State

This is an absolutely Gorgeous Example of the Certificate of a Knight Bachelor. It is authentic in every respect from the Royal Coat of Arms to the Royal Great Seal of State, it is embossed with the appropriate 30 revenue stamp. While the large picture is a photo as it was too large to scan, it shows the complete document. The red lines are hand ruled and do in fact run off the bottom of the award. It states that this was done and sealed "By Warrant Under the King's Sign Manual" with a calligraphic signature of Schuster. It should be noted that the expression "Sign Manual" which, while it used to indicate a personal autograph in olden days, or an actual signature, has come to be used as a legal term of art indicating that the document is issued under official auspices and carries the weight of a signed document of the sovereign. There are no actual signatures on the document as this is the formal Knight Certificate, not the accompanying Letter or Transmission of Award which is what is usually offered and which quite often are signed, although by this time, most regal signatures were either stamped facsimiles or later, auto-pen.
