1919 WINSTON CHURCHILL WAR DESPATCH ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Item Ref:  BSL - Churchill Despatch Acknowledgement

SIR WINSTON LEONARD SPENCER-CHURCHILL,
KG, OM, CH, TD, FRS, PC
 (1874-1965)

This is an Authentic, Official and Original Document issued on March 1st, 1919 by the British War Office. Following World War I it was common to acknowledge heroic and extraordinary actions by individual soldiers during the war. This Acknowledges that 139410 Gunner A. Turner, 32nd Siege Battery, 71st Brigade, D.C.M. was mentioned in a War Despatch by Commanding General Sir Douglas Haig, K.T., G.C.B., G.C.V.O., K.C.I.E., on November 8th, 1918 "for gallant and distinguished service".

Document Specifications:
This is an authentic, official Royal Note of Recognition on behalf of King George V on buff stock measuring 8
¾" wide x 7¼" tall (220mm x 185mm). This has in turn been mounted on a thicker cardboard backing. It is in Very Fine Condition and bears the stamped facsimile signature of Winston S. Churchill as Secretary of State for War and is from the War Office, Whitehall, S.W. and dated 1st March 1919.  PLEASE NOTE THAT WHILE THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF WINSTON CHURCHILL'S SIGNATURE, AND WAS APPLIED IN THE ORDINARY COURSE OF BUSINESS IN THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR, IT IS NOT CHURCHILL'S PERSONAL HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPH. THIS SIGNATURE, IN OUR OPINION, WAS APPLIED BY A FACSIMILE STAMP AND IS SOLD AS SUCH. STILL IT IS A DESIRABLE ARTIFACT AND DOCUMENT COMMEMORATING WORLD WAR I AND WHICH IS AUTHENTIC AND ORIGINAL IS ALL OTHER RESPECTS.
