An interesting look at the bureaucratic side of the Napoleonic War. Here Major Archdale files the Accompts of the 2nd Battalion, 50th Regiment of Foot, stationed in Eastbourne. A "STATEMENT of certain Accompts, and other Documents, required to be transmitted to the Secretary of War (Lord Palmerston), by Regiments of Infantry at Home". It is dated Eastbourne 24 July 1813 and signed by H. Archdale, Major, Commanding Officer. It has the wonderful handwritten postscript as follows:
"*A
man deserted from the Recruiting Station at Lavistock, an accounting of
which was received on the 2nd of July" |
